It houses the chambers of the Texas
Legislature and the office of the governor of Texas. It was
designed originally during 1881 by architect Elijah E. Myers, and
was constructed beginning 1882–88 by direction of civil engineer
Reuben Lindsay Walker
More commonly known as the "360 Bridge," the contract for the bridge was let in late 1979 and major structural steelwork was finished by July 1982. The bridge was dedicated officially November 29, 1982 and opened for traffic December 3, 1982.
The bridge is named for Percy Pennybacker who designed bridges for the Texas Highway Department and was a pioneer in the technology of structures.
The institution has the fifth-largest single-campus enrollment in the nation as of fall 2010 (and had the largest enrollment in the country from 1997 to 2003), with over 50,000 undergraduate and graduate students and 16,500 faculty and staff. It currently holds the largest enrollment of all colleges in the state of Texas.
